He had a job at a filling station, and a regular customer there was a door manufacturer. After high school, Rick worked for TRW defense contracting, but he maintained his connection with the door maker. Rick realized he could do door installation in his off hours from TRW. By scheduling pick-ups during his lunch breaks, he could get the door from his manufacturer contact, and do the delivery and installation after work. Before long, he realized he liked working with people much more than working in defense contracting.

At the wise old age of 22, Rick Gibbs began R&P Garage Doors, using his and his wife's initials. Rick and wife Pam Gibbs still run R&P Garage Doors, along with their son. As young as he was, he proved an ambitious business man, getting contracts with major home-improvement retailers to be installation contractor for Martin Doors and other major brands.

When asked about his line of work, Rick did not hesitate to state his delight in it. "It's important to me that customers like our work," said Rick "and they always do. I find that very rewarding." Rick is not given to bouts of self-promotion or effusive statements about his business, but he will allow that "It might sound corny, but I really try to be the best at what I do." Rick Gibbs and his wife Pam Gibbs are also civic-minded people who regularly donate to community charity organizations like Habitat for Humanity.
