Sherring Construction Company Profile
t would be safe to say David Sherring, of Sherring Construction in Walnut Creek, has building experience. While that might seem like an obvious conclusion for the owner of a construction company, it's worth noting that David's experience is unique among most other contractors. David has a wealth of practical, on-the-job experience, but Sherring Construction is also founded on a solid education and apprenticeship in the trade. David Sherring is Australian, and if you want to work in the construction trade there, a thorough, rigorous and well-respected training is standard. David and his twin brother were surrounded by design and engineering in Australia; their father was a civil engineer who worked on the largest construction project in Melbourne at the time, Collins Place. While still a young man, he apprenticed in the trade, and attended a technical high school where all aspects of construction are taught in an accredited forum. Upon completion of coursework at such a school, graduates have a professional level of competence in mechanical, drafting, sheet metal, woodworking, plumbing, and business management. This formal introduction and early exposure to so many aspects of construction means that Sherring Construction is uniquely situated to handle all kinds of projects with facility. Most importantly, David said the first thing students are taught is to "sweep the floor at the end of every day." He stressed that students are trained to build "square, plumb and level," terms he echoed throughout our interview. Sherring Construction has a devoted following of customers that rely on David's expertise and follow-through. Built Strong and Straight
"Layout is key," said David about a fundamental component of good building. Given his connection to civil engineering, David Sherring knows this first-hand. He also said that after having been drilled in each of the sub-contractor roles in the technical school, he is something of a perfectionist. "When I started this business, I used subcontractors for certain jobs, but I was always having to re-do those parts because the sub had done it wrong," said David "so now I just make sure it gets done by myself or someone on my team that knows how to build strong and level the first time!" Sherring Construction prides itself on timing and attention to detail.
About twenty years ago, David ventured out of Australia and eventually wound up in California. He says he was on a flight from New York to Los Angeles when he pointed out the spectacular sunset to the pretty flight attendant. She must have been thoroughly charmed (one presumes the accent played a small role) because they were married shortly thereafter. Their three children (between 11 and 15 years of age, and all tall, like David) pitch in with small jobs now and then. If you're in the market for a contractor, you can count on the experience and expertise of Sherring Construction.
