With undergraduate degrees in the fields of public health and business, as well as advanced degrees in related and unrelated fields, Arnold Koenig might seem like the academic type. But that characterization would be incomplete. He is also a creative, hands-on designer and contractor with a wealth of experience in the nitty-gritty details of the landscaping business, a community asset and a savvy businessman, interested in the future of the landscaping market.

A father of two, Arnold settled his family in Napa in 1970 where he originally worked as an education consultant for public health. He admits to having always loved building and design, despite pursuing a different path for several years. A public policy shift in the State of California around 1980 caused Arnold to reconsider his career options. As something of a lark, he placed an advertisement in the Napa Register for his nascent landscaping business A & A Landscaping. "I figured if I made enough money to cover the cost of running the ad, I'd give it a try," said Arnold. Needless to say, the advertising budget was covered. His children are grown now, but Arnold is happy to remain in the community where he has made a name for himself with residents and business leaders.

Around Sonoma and Napa counties, A & A Landscaping and Arnold Koenig have created hundreds of environments, including water features, outdoor kitchens, flagstone patios, wood-fire ovens (terrific for wood-fired pizza parties!), iron work, irrigation systems, outdoor lighting, arbors and trellises. The list of what A & A Landscaping can accomplish is practically limitless. In fact, fans of the HGTV show "Landscaper's Challenge" might be interested to know that when A & A was contacted to appear in an episode, the production company had to abandon the plan due to a lack of willing competition in Arnold's area. Arnold describes the episode as involving a Volkswagen-sized boulder, among other challenges. There were simply too few competitors willing to face the challenges presented, so the program was never filmed. A & A Landscaping was denied its fifteen minutes of fame, but Arnold Koenig is content to know that he is still on top.
