Roxy Designs Company Profile

o?> wner of Roxy Designs, Roxana Wolosenko learned to design total environments in an unusual way—as one of the designers of The Sims Community (the landmark virtual life-simulation game where players create their own characters, homes, businesses, hobbies, and online lives). Working as a virtual environments designer for twenty years, Roxy focused not on pixels and subroutines, but on the psychological experience of belonging to a virtual world. She learned how to make real people comfortable in a virtual world.

However, as Roxana Wolosenko created her own life and became a real-world mother, she felt a strong pull to the landscaping and design work that had always been a side vocation for her. Roxy left her work in software design and studied landscape architecture through UC Berkeley Extension, and horticulture at Merritt College and Diablo Valley College. She started Roxy Designs in Moraga, California in 2002, and is now a Contra Costa County Master Gardener with advanced training in lighting design & installation and firescaping best practices.

Beautiful, Smart and Sustainable Environments
Roxy believes that our gardens should help us connect to ourselves and to the natural world, and to that end, she makes sure that her landscape designs support her clients' dreams and are also completely suitable to their specific microclimate. Roxy Designs is known for creating sustainable, water-wise and welcoming landscapes that are low maintenance and low impact. Roxy is a Sustainable Environment Consultant and Certified Bay-Friendly Landscaper, which means that her landscapes protect our waterways and the Bay itself from excess fertilizer runoff and untreated water incursion. She can create water-retaining bioswales in specific areas, help you harvest your rainwater for irrigation use, and teach you to turn your own yard waste into compost, which you can use instead of fertilizer (fertilizers can harm waterways and the food web).

Roxy also has extensive experience in erosion control, riparian and wetland restoration and hillside bioengineering, which means that she truly can create an entire world within a world: a personalized, well-designed, environmentally sensitive and cohesive natural setting for your home and property.

Let Your Imagination Soar
Roxana Wolosenko is a creator of total environments, and her goal is to help you bring your dream landscape to life all around you. How do you want to live in your garden? What do you want to see as you walk into your yard? But more importantly, how do you want to feel in your private wilderness area? Do you like the feel of lush and sensual textures, bright colors, manicured plantings or flowing foliage? Do you love flowers in all seasons? Do you want an edible landscape? Roxy can help you define and manifest a landscape that will add beauty to your home and joy to your heart—all while you save water, protect the environment, avoid pesticides and chemical fertilizers and learn to work with hardy and suitable plants that will flourish in your unique location.

"Personal responsibility for your carbon footprint and your environmental consciousness starts at home," says Roxy, "in the environments you design and control." Roxy enjoys helping her clients choose the right plants for their needs, especially the right native species, many of which will need little care, and once established, may need no watering at all! With her help, you can approach your garden and landscape not only as a way to add beauty and value to your property, but as a part of your sustainable whole lifestyle.

One of the best reviews Roxy has ever had was from a client who, as she was leaving her new garden, said, "You know, you should keep on creating your beautiful footprint on the Earth." Roxy laughs as she remembers, "That completely made my day. No one ever said anything like that about my work on The Sims. Creating in this world, in this real world, is much more fulfilling." Indeed.
