MG Custom Cabinetry Company Profile
alking with Miguel Gutierrez, you get the feeling that he's the sort of artisan who is most comfortable expressing himself with his creations, rather than his words alone. He is a pleasant, humble (unless you get him talking about his sons, of whom is justifiably proud), and straightforward man, who happens to run a first-rate custom cabinetry and furniture business. MG Custom Cabinetry, Furniture, Exotic Veneers and Hardwood does excellent quality work with all kinds of woodworking projects, including kitchens, bathrooms, commercial cabinetry, and furniture, as well as glazing and etching for decorative effect.MG Custom Cabinetry, Furniture, Exotic Veneer and Hardwood can also do resurfacing for existing cabinets. Resurfacing is an option for cabinets that are structurally sound, but need to be updated or rejuvenated. It is a relatively involved process, but considerably less so than tearing out and installing new cabinetry. But Miguel's passion and true talents lie in his detailed, well-built woodworks.
Variety and Creativity
Miguel has a background in remodeling, which is a good thing for a woodworker. He explained that "I can see when things will cause a problem structurally, or when someone else has installed MDF (which is essentially cardboard), I can explain how to improve the quality by using better materials." These days, Miguel does woodworking primarily, but finds that his remodeling and building experience is still valuable for his customers. In addition to using three-quarter inch pre-finished maple in his cabinetry, Miguel uses many types of exotic veneers and hardwoods for unique effects. When this interviewer spoke to Miguel last, he had just returned from a tradeshow that had him very inspired about the resurgence of burl veneer in woodworking. He was clearly energized by what he'd seen and eager to show off what he could do for his customers using these burls and exotics. Burls are made from outgrowths on trees wherein the wood grain is swirled and curlicued, instead of the typical wood grain that is generally more linear. The effects from tasteful introductions of this type of veneer can be quite striking and beautiful. Exotic woods also have interesting colors and grains, and can make an impact or create a subtle interest. Judicious use of these materials makes many of Miguel's projects stand out, and has many of Miguel's customers asking for more projects. In fact, Miguel was contracted to create an ambitious new set of cherry wood cabinets and granite counter-tops for Whole Foods' anchor store in San Rafael. It was a big project on a tight schedule, and Miguel executed it beautifully. An executive at Whole Foods has employed MG Custom Cabinetry for several projects in his own home, including a hearth, mantle and custom kitchen cabinets, as a result of Miguel's exceptional quality work.
Instead of doing the same type of cabinet, finish or item of furniture for every customer, Miguel individually consults with each of his clients, and designs, creates and installs his custom creations. No two are ever the same. Miguel says that is what he likes best about his business, and also what he finds most rewarding. "It's very relaxing. Especially the furniture," said Miguel. Clearly, he loves his work and is glad to be able to do it. He spreads his goodwill to the surrounding community by sponsoring and participating in the charity event, "The Human Race," which he does with his wife and children.
If you find yourself in need of some excellent quality cabinetry or furniture for a very competitive rate (working alone helps keep Miguel's costs down), consider MG Custom Cabinetry, Furniture, Exotic Veneer and Hardwood. Miguel can create whatever you like beautifully, and with your unique imprint.
